I have the honour to forward the

following particulars with reference to a shooting affray

which took place among the junks anchored in this harbour

on the 31st. ultimo, at 7.30. p.m.

At 7.30 p.m. on the 31st. ultimo, a gener-

pal scuffle was heard among the junks anchored off Apli-

chow West, followed by rapid reports of firearms which

up twas eventually taken by junks anchored at every point of

the harbour; the firing continued unabated until about

9.50 p.m. when it lulled, but was continued at short in-

tervals until 1.45 a.m., when it ceased.

The Police in this district turned out un-

: der Arms, sad I took a party of Police and endeavoured

to induce them to desist, but when a few yards from two

, Junks which were anchored close to the Public Wharf, a

I shot was fired over the boat and it was the utmost diffi- culty the occupants of the junks were dissuaded from fir- ing on us. I boarded these junks and found that on one 44 rifles has been discharged, on the other 2, and these

had been reloaded and were ready for use; I took possess- ion of the arms, and the Masters of the junks came to the station. Their excuse for firing was that they heard the
